A little bit of home learning

Hello Moscow Base!

Here are some ideas if you want to keep your brain ticking over the holidays. You don't have to do any of them but they are here just in case!

  • Have a look at the videos on our blog and see if you can remember any of the facts
  • Take one tricky word and see if you can put it into a sentence. Keep going until you have used all of them. Try and remember your writing target!
  • Write me a letter telling me what you have been doing over the Christmas holidays
  • Make up your own number rap or song.
 See you in January!

Number work

Here are some rhymes and songs to help you with some number facts. See if you can test your mum or dad over the holidays.

PE - Music for our Machine Dance

We have been thinking about machines in our dance this half term.

We were inspired by the idea of a time machine and how it works. We are working really hard on our movements to make them machine like.

Science - Making predictions and conclusions

This week in our topic work, we wanted to find out about different clocks.

We looked at lots of different types of clocks and decided if they were old or new and what they were used for.
We didn't know what a pocket watch was used for and we found it a bit tricky to decide if they were old or new.

We then started to find out a bit about water clocks and sand timers. We all made one but the real skill was trying to make a scientific prediction.

We had to think carefully and use 'I predict that ...' It was quite hard but then we had to observe the experiment to see if our predictions were right.

In the water clock activity we recorded our results in a table and then had to try and decide which pot took the shortest time and which pot took the longest time.

We also learnt about candle clocks and what they might have been used for.

Some great science this week!

PE - Gymnastics

In  our PE we have been developing our gymnastic skills. We have learnt to balance in different ways,
explored different types of rolls, learnt how to carry weight in different ways and explored ways of travelling.

We then had to put a short sequence together using 3 balances, 2 different rolls and different ways of travelling.

Now, we need to work on how we present our sequences so they look as good as the amount of work that has gone into them!

Science - Using our senses to observe scientific wonders

We wanted to know how day changes into night as part of our topic of Time.

We started by looking at the sun and Earth in space and thought about what we could see and what was happening.

We then used the basket ball to represent the Earth and a torch to represent the sun.

We put ourselves on the Earth and then had to try and make us move from day light to night time.

Pirate Day in Year 1

Today was Pirate day in Year 1.

We all came dressed as pirates and finished our learning journey for this half term!

We have been busy using our DT skills by making cakes and thinking about how we make them, our Art skills by learning how to print and printing our own pirate hat and our Literacy skills through thinking about how to write a pirate poster.

We have also been learning a story to tell to mums and dads. It is called 'The Night Pirates' and we learnt it through story making.

Hard at work at a 'Wanted' poster

Exploring which piece of treasure is the heaviest

Faith pausing to think about her writing target

Using the scales to decide which is heavier

Reading about Pirates!

The finished product - Yum yum!

What shall I write next?

Thinking hard about my pirate

Adding the butter icing to the cakes
